Issued by Afghan Guest Tourism • Updated: 2 September 2025 • Event date: 31 August 2025
Current Situation
On 31 August 2025, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, affecting Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman and surrounding mountainous regions. The disaster caused extensive damage, casualties and infrastructure collapse. Rescue operations are still ongoing; many rural communities remain difficult to reach due to landslides and blocked roads.
What Tourists need to know
Travel to Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman and Nuristan should be postponed until recovery and safety conditions improve. Road conditions are damaged, villages are unstable and aftershocks are possible.
We will continue to keep you updated about the latest Travel Safety information on our Security, Travel Safety & Advisories page.
Infrastructure disruptions
Accommodation, hospitals and transport services in these affected provinces are heavily strained. Reliable access to healthcare, electricity and communications is limited.
Safety First
Afghan Guest advises against business and tourist travel to these regions until further notice. Further updates will be posted here on the Afghan Guest Tourism blog.
Alternative Destinations
Visitors may continue to explore safer provinces such as Kabul, Bamyan, Herat and Balkh, where no major earthquake damage has been reported. Afghan Guest Tourism can help arrange itineraries focused on these areas. For staff safety, Afghan Guest staff will not be operating in eastern Afghanistan until safety advisories from the earthquake in eastern Afghanistan have lifted.
